IRCTC is India’s premier passenger railway service, running over 20,000 km of train routes across the country. It is the largest railway network in India and second largest in the world. It has the largest network of railway stations and is a major driver of freight and passenger traffic in India. It has the highest number of railway engineers and railway managers in India and also has a very large network of offices and factories for producing railway equipment and other goods. It is the second largest railway network in the world after the Railways of China.
How does it work?
For a passenger to use IRCTC, they first need to book a ticket. When a passenger books a ticket, they give the passenger’s name and booking number. This is called the PNR (Passenger Name Record) number.
When the passenger arrives at the station, they check the PNR number on the digital board. The number is checked against the passenger’s record and a ticket is issued to the passenger.
How can I check my PNR status online?
The IRCTC app provides a platform to check your PNR status online. You can also check your PNR status by SMS.
What does PNR mean?
The PNR is a unique 10-digit number that is provided on your ticket. The number identifies your booking and gives you some information about your booking.
